Microsoft has released its latest update to Windows 10, which brings a number of security fixes and bugs. While it’s always recommended to make sure your machine is running the latest version of its software – Windows 10 July Security Update, in this case – you might want to wait a few more days to swerve the latest issues hidden inside this patch.
While the Windows 10 July Security Update is designed to harden your computer against security flaws, malware-focused blog Bleeping Computer claims the update is also breaking printers and scanners.
The issue seems to be limited to devices which rely on smart-card authentication, like printers in an office where staff can print documents to their personal account by swiping a card. It’s unclear why the latest update has stopped all smart-card activity. However, Microsoft has reassured those working in offices that authentication using a username and password on the printer should still work.
It is recommended to check that affected devices have the latest drivers installed, Microsoft has added.
But it’s not only those back in the office who are suffering due to the Windows 10 July Security Update. PC owners looking to unwind at the end of a long day of work have also fallen foul of the new update.

Windows 11: Microsoft teases brand new software update
Despite claiming to include a fix for a bug that triggers stuttering frame rates in games, it seems the Windows 10 July Security Update hasn’t solved the issue at all. The flaw leads to stuttering frame rates – leading footage to look choppy and uneven. As Microsoft describes it, the software leads to “lower than expected performance in games”. This is a particularly frustrating problem as it has been around since April – that’s a quarter of a year.
As reported by Windows Latest, Windows 10 users have flocked to Reddit to complain about the continuing issues and confirm that the bug is still around. One writes: “Once again, I am still having gaming performance issues since KB5000842”.
Another adds: “Yep, I can confirm. Nothing has changed since KB5000842. I have submitted feedback, I have talked with Microsoft developers, etc… Months of hearing from Microsoft that they have a fix coming or that KIR patch fixed it but nothing changes.”
Microsoft claims to be testing another patch for the frame rate problem with its beta testers right now, so fingers crossed, the software will be rolling out to all users worldwide in the coming weeks. By then it’ll have been four months since the original problem was flagged, something the PC gaming community is unlikely to allow Microsoft to forget anytime soon.
The good news is that anyone who doesn’t rely on printers in the office or play any high-end PC games… there are no other reported problems with Windows 10, so you should be able to move ahead and install the update without worry.
