The latest tech event to fall victim to the coronavirus is Microsoft’s annual developer conference.
The tech giant has announced that Build 2020 will now become a ‘digital event’ as the US attempts to limit the spread of COVID-19.
Build was due to take place in Seattle from May 19 to May 21 but Microsoft has followed the likes of Facebook and Google, which both cancelled their own physical developer conferences.
‘The safety of our community is a top priority,’ Microsoft said in a statement. ‘In light of the health safety recommendations for Washington State, we will deliver our annual Microsoft Build event for developers as a digital event, in lieu of an in-person event.
‘We look forward to bringing together our ecosystem of developers in this new virtual format to learn, connect and code together. Stay tuned for more details to come.’
The event is one of Microsoft’s biggest of the year and usually sees thousands of developers converge to discuss the latest changes to Windows, Office and other Microsoft products.
How the company intends to deliver its digital event remains to be seen. While the keynote addresses could be livestreamed easily enough, having workshops and developer meetings may prove a bit more tricky.
