Although LG sales and profits are soaring, its mobile division is struggling. Handset sales were down 24.5 percent in the third quarter of 2019 due to a “challenging global smartphone market”. But it seems the South Korean tech giant has something up its sleeve to bring the fight back. LG is taking the fight to arch-rival Samsung with its latest flagship, the LG G9. That’s according to renowned tipster OnLeaks who recently collaborated with CashKaro to share renders of the LG G9 ahead of its launch.
It seems the South Korean company’s next flagship will ditch the vein sensors that debuted on the LG G8 last year in favour of a smaller notch to allow for a greater screen-to-body ratio this time around.
Just like the LG G8 and V50, the G9 appears to be gunning for a subtle – but premium – design. According to CashKaro, the device will boast a display ranging from 6.7 to 6.9-inches in size with a teardrop-style cutout at the top for a single front-facing camera.
No physical fingerprint sensor can be found on the device, suggesting LG will place a reader underneath the phone’s display.
Although LG spearheaded the movement to bring ultra wide-angle cameras to smartphones, the firm has since fallen behind rivals that have introduced time-of-flight sensors and periscope zooms to their arrays. LG could attempt to recapture its photography magic by introducing its first-ever quad-camera array on the G9.
Although it’s unclear what the function of each of these lenses would be, we’re expecting the handset to boast a primary, telephoto, ultra wide-angle and possibly a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. The renders from OnLeaks showed the phone’s cameras aligned horizontally à la Galaxy S10.
Interestingly, it seems the G9 is going to retain a headphone jack which, if true, would make it one of the only flagship devices on the market to boast the age-old port.
Unfortunately, neither OnLeaks nor CashKaro commented on the internal specifications of the LG G9. However, it’s expected the device will sport the newest processor on the market (Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 perhaps?) and come with a generous amount of RAM.
It’s also unclear if the device will be 5G-ready or not. Last year the only LG flagship to come with 5G support was the V50 ThinQ.
Pricing and a release date also remains a mystery, but LG has a history of unveiling its latest flagship smartphones at MWC in February, meaning we may only be a few weeks away from seeing what Samsung’s arch-rival has in store.
Express.co.uk will be attending MWC, which takes place from February 24 to 27, and will bring you all the latest LG news as it happens.
