iPhone SE 2 and new iPad Pro with triple-camera could launch soon, report claims

If you’re still rocking the original iPhone SE because of its smaller footprint, but feel like you’re missing out on the latest camera tricks available in the likes of the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, then you’re in luck. Apple is believed to be working on a new version of the handset which is on-track to launch in the first few months of next year.

Not only that, but the Cupertino-based company is also purportedly planning to debut a new version of the iPad Pro at the same time.

Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most respected Apple analysts in the business, has claimed that we’ll see both the iPhone SE 2 (although, we’d be surprised if that was the final name) and the new iPad Pro in the “first half of 2020”. In previous years, Apple has held a media event in March to announce new hardware. That seems like the most likely time for the launch.

According to Kuo, who has a solid track record when it comes to as-yet unannounced Apple hardware, the new iPad Pro will have a refreshed camera system with a Time of Flight (ToF) system to judge distances in three-dimensional space.

That should improved the accuracy of Augmented Reality (AR) games and applications, which place digital elements in the real-world through the viewfinder on your tablet or smartphone. It could also enable Apple to add Portrait Mode-style photographs to the iPad Pro – a first for the tablet series.

The current iPad Pro only has a single rear-facing camera, which looks pretty sparse when compared to the new iPhone 11 Pro, which has a total of three lens. That includes a wide-angle, ultra-wide angle, and a 2x telephoto to add lossless zoom to the phone. If Ming-Chi Kuo is right, the iPad Pro will only have two cameras, plus the ToF sensor.

None of these claims are especially new. Rumours of an overhauled iPad Pro have been floating around for a while. After all, Apple usually updates its hardware annually – and the last update to the iPad Pro, which brought a new industrial design and Face ID to the tablet – took place in October 2018.

Of course, it’s been even longer since we saw a new iPhone SE, which originally launched March 31, 2016. Kuo believes iPhone SE 2 will have a 4.7-inch screen – like the iPhone 6, an A13 chipset, 3GB of RAM and Touch ID fingerprint scanner. It will also have a lower price point than the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.

It’s rumoured to start from $399 (that’s around £399 converted) with 64GB of internal storage. It will ship in Space Grey, Red and Silver finishes.

Regardless of how reliable Ming-Chi Kuo has been in the past, this is still just a rumour. Plans could change inside Apple, so it’s worth taking all of this with the prescribed pinch of salt. We’ll keep you posted if we hear more about the iPad Pro and iPhone SE 2 ahead of the launch event next year.
