The giveaway is certainly in the name, but Huawei’s P-series has always placed photography on a pedestal. Sure, all flagship smartphones lean heavily into their cameras, but the P-series really goes all out. The P20 Pro was the first handset to come with a trio of lenses on its rear and a dedicated night mode within its software – both of which were headline features back in 2018 but have since both become smartphone norms.
Then there was last year’s P30 Pro – the first handset to be sold with a periscope-style telephoto camera capable of offering a 5x optical zoom. Safe to say, Huawei is undeniably pushing the boundaries of smartphone photography forward with its P-series flagships.
And it seems the P40 Pro will be no different, at least if a new leak from tipster RODENT950 is to be believed.
The Slashleaks contributor recently took to Twitter and posted what appear to be alleged specs for the P40 Pro’s camera. And it’s quite a lot.
Huawei’s newest handset will purportedly come with five cameras on its rear, comprised of:
• 52-megapixel Sony IMX700 RYYB primary sensor
• 40-megapixel Sony IMX650 RGGB ultra wide-angle sensor
• 3x optical telephoto sensor
• 10x optical dual prism periscope zoom sensor
• Time-of-flight (ToF) sensor
Assuming the leak from RODENT950 is accurate, the P40 Pro could boast some of the best camera hardware on a smartphone, period.
What’s most interesting are the claims the device will offer a 10x optical zoom which, if true, would double the phone’s magnification over the P30 Pro.
With such a huge optical zoom, it certainly makes sense that Huawei would add an additional 3x optical camera to ensure photo quality doesn’t take a plunge if you want to get a little closer to your subject but don’t need a full 10x magnification.
Huawei’s camera hardware has traditionally been pretty superb, but the firm also has great software to back it up. The P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro are still arguably the two best cameras when it comes to brightening up a photo taken in extreme low-light conditions, for instance.
It’s presumed Huawei will improve its image processing software and AI capabilities to accompany the new array of sensors rumoured for the P40 Pro.
Camera aside, Huawei’s newest flagship is expected to go all-out in the spec department. The device is sure to be powered by the firm’s in-house Kirin 990 processor, be 5G-ready and offer a generous amount of RAM.
Additionally, it’s also rumoured the phone will house a huge 4,500mAh battery and support fast wired charging up to 45W.
But of course, we won’t have anything official to report about the P40 Pro until Huawei takes to the stage in Paris on March 26.
