After months of rumours, leaks and endless speculation, Google has finally lifted the lid on its all-new Pixel Fold. This clever smartphone features a nifty design that opens like a book to reveal an expansive 7.6-inch 120Hz display which will give owners loads of space to answer emails, surf the web and binge on boxsets. Snap the Fold shut and there’s also a neat 5.6-inch cover screen which works just like a normal smartphone. That means users can reply to texts and check the football scores without needing to open things up.
The Pixel Fold is clearly taking aim at Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold range of devices and Google is trying to steal some customers away from its Korean rival with the offer of a tempting free gift.
Anyone who pre-orders the Pixel Fold will get a Pixel Watch wearable, worth £339, thrown in for free.
It’s a good launch incentive although it is worth noting that the Fold costs a rather hefty £1,749 so it definitely won’t suit those on a tight budget.
Along with that clever design, there are plenty more treats tucked inside the Pixel Fold. On the rear case is a triple-lens camera system that comes packed with all the usual features we’ve come to expect from Google.
The US tech giant is leading the pack when it comes to smartphone photography and this rear snapper includes a Super Res Zoom for pin-sharp close-ups, Night Sight for evening shots and Portrait photography to add some DSLR-style to snaps.
Owners will also be treated to some clever imaging software including the mind-boggling Magic Eraser – which can remove unwanted objects from photos – and Photo Unblur which sharpens family snaps long after they have been taken.
Thanks to the Fold’s design you can also open up the phone and use the main rear camera to take improved selfies – the cover screen acts as a viewfinder so you’ll always get the perfect crop.
Other features include an IPX8 rating so it can handle an accidental spills and it’s guaranteed to be one of the first phones to get Android 14 when it arrives later this year.
Google is also trying to make sure that owners get the most out of the main display thanks to improved multitasking which allows users to run two apps side by side.
Head under the hood and the Fold is powered by Google’s Tensor G2 chip which can easily cope with even the most demanding of tasks.
There’s also a large battery that can be wirelessly and fast charged with Google boasting that users can get a whopping 72 hours of life with Extreme Battery Saver turned on.
The Pixel Fold is available to pre-order now with it shipping to customers next month.
