After months of teases, speculation, and leaks, the Pixel 4 will finally be revealed by Google during a glitzy showcase in bustling New York. The Mountain View firm has already confirmed the new phone will be unveiled to its legion of loyal fans along with new “connected home devices”.
Google revealed the Pixel 4 back in June…well, half of it anyway. The firm posted a picture of the back of the device that showed its new square camera housing. The phone itself was shown to boast two camera sensors – a first for any Pixel device.
Leading up to its final reveal, Google confirmed the device will tote an array of facial scanning technologies and a nifty motion-sensing radar called Soli. The latter will allow users to operate certain functions using gestures – like waving your hand above the screen to pause a song.
In addition to teases from Google itself, a stream of leaks surrounding the Pixel 4 have also surfaced ahead of its release. In fact, multiple hands-on videos have emerged from YouTubers who appear to have obtained the handset early.
These clips have seemingly outed a variety of new features in the Pixel 4, like a 90Hz display, new facial unlocking system, and more.
What hasn’t really been discussed in detail is the Pixel 4’s specifications. Weeks before the event – and dozens of leaks later – we’re still in the dark about exactly what the Pixel 4 will be packing under the bonnet.
But now, it seems all that information and more has surfaced courtesy of a fresh leak from the folks at 9to5Google. The outlet recently posted a stream of purported Pixel 4 details, including samples from its camera and videos displaying how its gesture controls will work.
Most notable of all though was a full spec sheet said to come from Google itself.
First up, the document said the Pixel 4 will come in two varieties – the standard Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. This isn’t surprising as all previous Pixel phones have come in similar pairings.
The smaller Pixel 4 will have a 5.7-inch full HD+ display, while the XL will supposedly tote a 6.3-inch Quad HD+ panel. Both panels were said to have refresh rates up to 90Hz, just like the OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T.
In terms of battery life, the Pixel 4 will purportedly come with a fairly small 2,800mAh cell while the XL will have a much larger 3,700mAh capacity.
Interestingly, it was noted Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 will power both mobiles and not the manufacturer’s newer Snapdragon 855+ processor that delivers increased performance, especially when gaming.
The most notable information about the new Android flagships detailed is around each handset’s camera system. Both were noted to come with a 12-megapixel primary shooter and a 16-megapixel telephoto sensor. If accurate, this means the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will miss out on an ultra wide-angle snapper.
Although LG pioneered ultra wide-angle lenses years ago, this type of sensor has now become incredibly popular with rival flagship manufactures in the last year, with the likes of Apple, Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus and Xiaomi now fitting an ultra-wide as standard.
We adore ultra wide-angle lenses at Express.co.uk. We personally think they not only incentivise creativity, but also allow you to take photos that are simply not possible with primary sensors.
The apparent omission on the Pixel 4 will certainly come as a huge disappointment to many Android fans eager to see how Google’s image processing trickery could perform on an ultra wide-angle.
Of course, it’s still worth taking the latest leak from 9to5Google with a small pinch of salt. Simply because Google has not confirmed the camera specifications of the Pixel 4 itself yet.
Express.co.uk will be bringing you all the announcements from Google’s hardware event on October 15.
