Google Pixel 3 update – This phone’s budget rival may have just been unmasked

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were released at the tail end of last year and remain one of the best Android devices around, especially for those wanting a great camera and software.

As is standard with the American tech giant’s smartphone line, the Pixel 3 is available in two models; the standard Pixel 3 and larger Pixel 3 XL.

Both devices are currently being sold for £150 off their original asking price thanks to a sale from Google, making both even more appealing.

Although the premium Pixel 3 is currently on sale, it appears the hardware is about to be challenged by a new budget rival from Google itself.

The American tech giant has been heavily rumoured to be hard at work on two new budget Pixel 3 devices.

Claimed to be called the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL respectively, it seems as though both are set to make compromises in features and design in order to achieve a more appealing price tag.

Murmurings of a cheaper Pixel 3 device started as early as November last year when Russian outlet Rozetked showed claimed images of the handset.

The hardware was shown to look very similar to the standard Pixel 3 but arrived with thicker bezels above and below its display, a plastic casing and was stated to be powered by a Snapdragon 670 processor.

It was insisted one area in which the handset did not compromise was in its rear camera array that was said to be the same as on the standard Pixel 3.

If true, this could provide the cheaper device with a unique selling point over its rivals.

New images of the claimed Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL have now emerged thanks to Android Headlines and may have given Google fans their best look at the device yet.

The pair were shown to look incredibly similar with the Pixel 3a XL appearing only slightly bigger than its budget brother.

Similar-sized bezels were show above and below each’s screen with neither featuring a notch.

The duo were stated to come with a headphone jack at the top of their frame, a design characteristic not present on the standard Google Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL.

Only a single front-facing camera appeared to exist on the front of the hardware, meaning the new phone’s could miss out on the wide-angle selfie snapper offered by Google’s more premium handset.

Pixel 3a has been tipped to come with a 5.6-inch screen while the Pixel 3a XL has been speculated to have a 6-inch display.

Additionally, the pair have both been rumoured to tout a similar size battery to their respective premium brothers.

WinFuture has insisted the Pixel 3a could be priced from €450 which translates to roughly £389 at the time of writing.

Google recently teased new Pixel hardware is set to be announced on May 7.
