Huawei has unveiled what could become its rival operating system to Google’s Android.
HarmonyOS was launched at a developer’s conference in China, amid a bruising trade war between the US and the country which has seen Huawei caught in the middle. The new OS is part of Huawei’s attempts to develop its own technologies, from chips to software, to reduce its reliance on US firms, which have been restricted from trading with it under American government rules.

“HarmonyOS is completely different from Android and iOS,” said Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s consumer business group. “You can develop your apps once, then flexibly deploy them across a range of different devices.”
Mr Yu said the company still does not know whether it can continue to use Android.
