Galaxy S10 update: Why Samsung really needs this vital upgrade on its Galaxy S11

Samsung’s new Galaxy S11 could be released very soon with the Korean technology firm almost certain to reveal all in the coming months. Although not confirmed, the first quarter of the year is when the next Galaxy S flagship is always revealed and we’re not expecting anything different in 2020.

There’s already been plenty of rumours about what could be included with speculation mounting that Samsung will bring a quad-camera set-up to its latest and greatest smartphone.

A faster processor, such as recently announced Snapdragon 865, bigger battery and refreshed design are also all possible.

These are all must-have upgrades but there is one update that could be vital if Samsung wants to stay ahead of the competition.

When the Galaxy S10 arrived earlier this year it was one of the first phones to include an embedded fingerprint scanner under the screen.

This new technology allowed Samsung to bring this popular security feature back to the front of the device.

  • Has the Galaxy S11’s biggest change just been revealed?

It was a smart move but it’s not been without its issues.

Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S10 was found to have a shocking flaw that could allow anyone to unlock the screen and access personal data.

The issue was first discovered by a British couple who found any thumbprint could allow access to the device once a screen protector was fitted.

Samsung has now fixed this bug but that’s not the only problem with this sensor.

There’s also the mild annoyance of finding the right place to pop your thumb as it’s quite a small area that holds the technology.

Luckily, it seems some of these niggles may have been solved with Qualcomm announcing its latest fingerprint technology during its Tech Summit in Hawaii.

The firm’s new 3D Sonic Max reader is the very latest version of this ultrasonic fingerprint tech and it has one very big advantage over what is currently available.

Qualcomm says that its latest security feature now offers a 17 times larger area than its previous version which means it’s almost impossible not to find it when you want to unlock the screen.

There’s also the option to improve security even further via simultaneous two-finger authentication.

This means the device can’t be accessed until you’ve placed both thumbs on the screen at the same time. Finally, it seems Qualcomm is confident that screen protectors won’t hinder the use of this scanner.

In an interview with CNET, Qualcomm’s Alex Katouzian, said that its new 3D Sonic Max should avoid any screen protector problems by capturing a clearer complete fingerprint when reading due to the larger scanner size.

It’s currently unclear which phones will introduce Qualcomm’s latest upgrade but even if Samsung doesn’t feature it you can expect them to offer something similar in the future.

Express.co.uk is at Qualcomm’s Tech Summit in Hawaii and will be bringing all the news during this three-day event.
