Elon Musk says Tesla truck has 200,000 orders – despite humiliating launch event

Elon Musk claims his all-electric Cybertruck has had 200,000 orders – despite a disastrous launch, sliding share price and no advertising.

The Tesla billionaire announced on Twitter today that the new model has already received a massive number of orders.

He told his followers on Saturday: "146k Cybertruck orders so far, with 42% choosing dual, 41% tri & 17% single motor" – adding: "with no advertising & no paid endorsements".

After tweeting other updates about order numbers, today the tech entrepreneur simply tweeted "200k".

The volume of orders may come as a surprise to some who watched Thursday's launch presentation – when a metal ball cracked the vehicles windows in a rehearsed strength test demonstration, despite claims the truck is "ultra-hard" and "won't scratch or dent".

Footage of the event shows Musk looking lost for words as a window is smashed by the ball, thrown by a Tesla employee.

He then asks the demonstator to throw the ball a second time, resulting in a second window being broken.

Musk tried to shrug the embarrassing moment off and told the audience: "Maybe that was a little too hard. At least it didn't go through, that's a plus side".

During Thursday's highly-anticipated launch the electric carmaker's share price began to tumble and by Friday morning the company had lost 6.4% of it's value.

Forbes magazine, who list Musk as the 41st richest person in the world, said this saw his personal net worth drop by £598m.

Analysts appear torn over the vehicle, with some praising the launch, whilst others are doubting the mass appeal of the the futuristic design.

The Cybertruck is available for pre order and starts at $30,700; customers will need to upfront an initial payment of £100 to reserve one.

Tesla plans to start manufacturing the truck in late 2021.
