Online auction site eBay is currently investigating why its email icon was swapped for the image of a topless woman.
The picture appeared at the top of messages received by users of Microsoft’s Outlook mobile app.
Swift-thinking members of Microsoft’s development team pushed out an update as soon as it was noticed. The icon has since been set back to the letter-based ‘E’ logo.
The online retailer told tech site The Register it is now ‘investigating’ the incident.
‘We are in touch with Microsoft – one of our email service providers in the UK – who is actively investigating the root cause of the matter,’ a spokesperson for eBay said.
Twitter and Reddit users jumped on the mistake and began discussing what might have been the cause.
One suggested it may have happened by accident after the Outlook app accidentally grabbed the image from a computer used by admin staff during maintenance.
Whatever the cause, if the icon is still appearing on your Outlook email account it can be removed by resetting the app. Click on the settings menu, select ‘Email account’ then click on ‘Reset’.
