Best Buy dropped the ball when they accidentally sold a Chromecast that had been unannounced.
Most of the time, no one really expects Best Buy to leak a product that would have likely been announced on Oct. 9, 2018, but according to The Verge, a customer picked it up off the shelf from the retail giant.
The product did not even show up in the Best Buy system but the cashier likely didn’t even realize what was happening as they just scanned the item and treated it as a normal Chromecast. The cool story was even posted on Reddit by user GroveStreetHomie.
It is good news to some extent since Google has not really updated this equipment in a while. The product line’s last great thing was the Chromecast Ultra, which featured the ability to stream in beautiful 4K.
While this might not be the coolest of things to happen to someone, it is most certainly unique. You see, most people think that a product really only gets shipped a day or so before the initial release date, however, this can’t be the case because if you look at this incident, it could have been there for a few days already.
As for how the product even ended up on the shelf of a Best Buy is another very easy explanation. Some floor clerk likely stocked the shelves and searched for the Chromecast box in the back, they obviously took the wrong one and put these on the shelf with the general Chromecast pricing sticker. It’s actually quite common to mistake stuff when you can’t see what’s inside the actual box, this is especially true in the fast-paced environment of the retail world.
It’s good to see something like this happen because it shows that Google at least somewhat prepares for people trying to get their hands on the greatest and latest tech on the market. That in itself is amazing because it’s so often seen that many companies tend to underestimate how much they need to prepare for people who want their products.
