Astronomers have been studying black holes for years and now we may finally be able to see one up close.
The team at the European Southern Observatory have announced plans to make a ‘groundbreaking’ announcement later this month.
That’s right – this is the announcement of an announcement.
We guess the hype-building may be due to the fact the news surrounds the Event Horizon Telescope – which is carrying out an international mission to capture and present the very first image of a black hole.
Specifically, they’ve been trained on Sagittarius A* at the center of the Milky Way and the black hole at the center of a nearby galaxy called Messier 87.
And the nature of the announcement on April 10 (there’s six simultaneous press conferences happening around the world) suggests that we may finally have a picture of one or both to look at.
If so, it could be one of the biggest scientific achievements of the decade.
