From iPhones to AirPods, Apple is known for its impressive yet pricey gadgets.

Now, the tech giant has launched one of its most expensive products to date, in the form of the new Mac Pro.

The basic Mac Pro starts at £5,499, but has a range of add-ons that could see consumers spending up to £54,724.98.

Speaking at launch, Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said: "We designed Mac Pro for users who require a modular system with extreme performance, expansion and configurability."

Firstly, customers must choose which processor to opt for, ranging from the basic 3.5GHz 8-core Intel Xeon W processor with Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz (price included), through to the 2.5GHz 28-core Intel Xeon W processor with Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz, which costs £6,300.

Next, you’ll have to choose which memory option you’d like. The cheapest option (price included) is 32GB of DDR4 ECC memory, while the most expensive option (£22,500) is 1.5TB of DDR4 ECC memory.

One user tweeted: “So they decided to make the new Mac Pro tower look like a cheese grater because… ? And it can be yours for the low low price of (starting from) $5,999. And don’t be silly… obviously that doesn’t include the monitor that is an additional (starting from) $4,999.”

Another added: “For a maxed out Mac Pro you can easily get a mid priced Cybertruck. Both come with four wheels.”

And one joked: “Everyone joking about the price of the Mac Pro is missing one very important thing: It comes with a *free* Lightning cable!
