For many people, leaving the house involves a quick mental checklist consisting of ‘keys, phone and wallet.’
But the days of having to carry your car keys around with you could soon be a thing of the past for iPhone users.
A new report claims that Apple could soon launch a new feature called ‘CarKey’, that allows you to unlock, lock and start your car with your iPhone.
The feature was spotted by 9to5Mac in the beta version of iOS 13.4.
9to5Mac explained: “iOS 13.4 contains references to a “CarKey” API, which will make it possible to use the iPhone and also the Apple Watch to unlock, lock, and start a car.
“According to the system’s internal files, users will be able to use CarKey in NFC-compatible cars, as they only need to hold the device near the vehicle to use it as a key.”
To use the feature, users will simply need to hold their iPhone or Apple Watch up to the car, and it will automatically unlock, without even requiring Face ID.
9to5Mac added that the feature will be shareable with other people, such as family members who all drive the same car.
It added: “Another interesting information is that CarKey can be shared with other people, such as family members. Drivers can invite them also through the Wallet app to have access to the key on their own Apple devices.”
It’s important to keep in mind that this is only the first beta of iOS 13.4, and it remains unclear if CarKey will feature in the final version.
A release date for the final version of the operating system is also yet to be announced.
