You’d be forgiven for thinking that smartphones have all become rather samey.
So if you’re fed up with choosing between a Samsung Galaxy thingamabob or an iPhone whatchamacallit, we have some good news for you.
Apple is rumoured to be planning to do think unthinkable and release an iPhone that’s not exactly the same as all the previous models.
Now, we’re a bit uncomfortable slagging off Apple because iPhones are still the best phones on the market by a country mile (in this writer’s opinion, anyway).
But the releases are getting very predictable.
For instance, even though the iPhone X was hailed as the biggest innovation since the wheel, it wasn’t that different from previous models.
Aside from a cool infinity display and a security system which unlocks the device by scanning your face, it was basically just a better version of a traditional iPhone.
Optimistic analysts are hoping Apple has something up its sleeve and have suggested it’s probably working on a folding phone a bit like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, which has still not been released to the public after review models dramatically broke whilst being tested.
Analysts from the financial firm 2021 have published a briefing note about the future of phones which suggests a folding iPhone could come next year, although ‘2021 is more likely’.
Phone firms face a tough challenge persuading customers that the price bump of folding gadgets is worth it.
The Samsung Fold, for instance, is expected to cost just under £2,000.
‘Price remains the key hurdle in most consumers’ minds, while the adequate average premium vs regular smartphones surveyed to be [between] $400 and 500,’ UBS analysts wrote in its note, according to CNBC.
‘The survey indicates greater willingness to pay a premium… and generally higher interest among Apple buyers for foldable products.’
UBS said a folding iPad was likely to hit the market first, followed by an iPhone.
