The developers of the games will out their ratings in a questionnaire distributed by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC).
They are then supposed to check the titles against the rating system.
A spokesman from IARCH told Wired: “With the high volume of published games and apps participating rating authorities are not able to monitor every single release.”
Therefore the group focuses on the games which are the most downloaded.
And Wired did note that most of the adult games with kid-friendly ratings had comparatively small install counts, but some of them still had hundreds of thousands of downloads.
On the other side, Apple’s App Store review the apps before accepting the rating.
Apple has a strict age rating policy on all apps, in contrast to Google.
This is different to the Google Play Store, which is “100% based on the honour system”, said Baciou Ciprian, head of Bearded Giant Games.
