The answer to the headline is, first and foremost, that it’s devastating for Dejounte Murray, a young Spurs point guard with so much promise, and who looked like a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the floor this season.
For fantasy owners, they’ll lose a high-profile sleeper.
The question is: Who do you replace Murray with or draft in the coming week or so?
Let’s start with Patty Mills. He’s spent much of his nine-year career coming off the bench as a sparkplug who can hit threes (a career 39 percent from beyond the arc) and keep the offense humming while Gregg Popovich rests his starter. You’d immediately think the 30-year-old is the prime candidate to start.
But the interesting thing is some of Mills’ numbers as a reserve are worse than what he’s put up in 54 contests as a starter – he’s shot better from the field and from three when coming off the bench. Although it’s a small sample size, you have to wonder if Popovich thinks Mills’ role off the bench is too valuable to change things up. And these Mills quotes from Monday seem to indicate he thinks the next guy up should be Derrick White:
