Ben Cutting looked to have dismissed Melbourne Renegades' Marcus Harris from the fourth ball of the match.
The 31-year-old hovered underneath a mistimed stroke from the opener and appeared set to make an early breakthrough.
But Cutting allowed the ball to slip through his fingers and strike him on the nose – bringing a new meaning to the term Big Bash.
Though the Brisbane Heat man was instantly covered in blood after the blow he was able to grab hold of the loose ball on his chest, before releasing it into the air.
The umpires duly concluded that Cutting did not have control of the ball and deemed Harris to be not out.
Former England bowler Phil Tufnell said on commentary: "He dropped it, hit his head, it has bounced on his chest and he has picked it up to show he has still got it, but for me no.
"Straight on the schnoz."
Harris himself added: “He looked pretty rattled, so hopefully he is ok.
“He had a bit of claret coming out of him the poor fella.”
To add insult to injury the Renegades went on to complete an eight-wicket victory – Harris scored 28 from 18 balls – as they chased down 145 to win with 26 balls remaining.
The Mumbai Indians man needed five stitches to repair the damage and thankfully looks set to make a full recovery.
England will be hoping to give Australia a bloody nose of their own in the Ashes later this year.
