The world No 1 was teeing off on the 12th hole during the second round of the US PGA Championship when he came within inches of being hit.
It was not immediately clear which hole the ball came from but it was almost certainly the result of a wild shot from a fellow competitor.
Unflappable Johnson did not even flinch as the careering ball blazed in front of him.
Completely undeterred, the American, 34, clipped his tee shot away to 11ft and then rolled in the putt for a birdie.
He birdied the next hole as well to reach four under before eventually signing for a four-under 66 to finish seven under overall.
That is three shots behind early second round leader Gary Woodland, who also shot 66 in the second round at Bellerive Country Club in St Louis, Missouri.
Meanwhile, two-time US Open champ Brooks Koepka blazed round in seven-under 63 – matching the lowest score in US PGA history.
The 28-year-old shot a three-under 32 on his front nine – the back – before picking up more shots on the front nine proper's first three holes.
He added another on the eighth before missing a 19ft birdie putt on the last that would have given him the joint lowest score ever in a Major.
