Tottenham star Hugo Lloris hits out at team-mates concentration after nearly throwing away three goal lead at Wolves

The French keeper delivered a brutally-honest verdict after Spurs made life hard for themselves yet again and put their supporters through the wringer at Molineux.

Lloris is clearly becoming frustrated with the side’s inability to kill teams off — particularly in the Champions League, where conceding late goals cost them crucial points at Inter Milan and PSV.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side cannot afford a repeat against the Dutch outfit at Wembley tomorrow in a Group B game they must win to stand any chance of reaching the knockout stages.

But Lloris, 31, who is suspended tomorrow after his red card in Eindhoven, points to similar lapses in the Premier League — even before Saturday night’s wobble at Wolves when they were 3-0 up and cruising before giving away two late penalties.

Lloris rapped: “We play in one way and it demands a lot of energy and concentration.

“We are always in control of the ball and we always try to press the opponents. If it is 0-0, 3-0 or 1-0 down, we have to be more clever with the ball and without the ball.

“We need to learn. It is not the first time this has happened in the Champions League and in the league that opponents created chances in the last minutes of the game.

"It is something we need to improve on.

"We have shown in the last few years that Tottenham have a way of playing and we try to respect the plan but I think there are lot of things to learn.

"We cannot control everything in the game but we can do better with the ball.

“It is the responsibility of the players. Of course the manager has his expectations and so do the staff. I think they try to give us the main tools and then it is about us.

"Against Wolverhampton, we could have managed the game another way. At 3-0, you do not have to press.”

It all might seem a bit rich coming from a man who has not always had his eye on the ball, on or off the pitch this season, but Lloris clearly felt it was time to make his point.

Tottenham were in complete control when Erik Lamela finished off a cracking move by scoring through Rui Patricio’s legs on 27 minutes.

And Lucas Moura — all 5ft 7in of him — was left unmarked to head home a second from Kieran Trippier’s cross just three minutes later.

Wolves were angry at Raul Jimenez having an effort incorrectly ruled out for offside and the game looked over when Harry Kane scored at the second attempt in the 62nd minute.

But Juan Foyth’s Premier League debut took a nasty turn as the Argentine centre-back conceded two penalties before being shunted into midfield to be kept out of danger.

First, the 20-year-old fouled Jimenez on 68 minutes and Ruben Neves scored from the spot, and then, 11 minutes later, Foyth put his foot in on Jonny for Jimenez to make it 3-2.

Spurs held on despite some scares and Lloris added: “Wolverhampton played very well in the second half — they came back with a new energy and inside we had a lack of concentration and were not aggressive.

“I think the penalties were generous but it is part of the game and you have to respect the decisions. It was unfair for Foyth because, for me, he was one of the best players on the pitch.”

Spurs are back at Wembley tomorrow with no date on the horizon for finishing their new £850million stadium.

And Lloris hopes the surface will be better than it was for last Monday’s 1-0 defeat by Manchester City when it had been churned up by an NFL game just 24 hours earlier.

Lloris added: “It has been nearly a year-and-a-half with us playing away from home. It is not an easy period for Tottenham players or fans but we have to deal with that.

“We managed quite well last season. It is worse when there are American football games a few days before but we need to accept that and we cannot complain. We need to keep working and stick together.”
