The Jets are interviewing former Packers coach Mike McCarthy on Saturday, according to sources, as they continue to search for their next head coach.
McCarthy is viewed by many people as the top coach available. McCarthy clearly has the best resume of any of the potential coaches. He went 125-77-2 in the regular season with the Packers in 13 seasons before getting fired last month. He won the Super Bowl in 2010 and led Green Bay to the playoffs nine times.
McCarthy, 55, has a background of working with quarterbacks, which is a plus for the Jets, who are looking for someone to develop Sam Darnold.
“The person doesn’t necessarily have to be an offensive- or defensive-minded head coach, per se, but we definitely want to make sure they have a plan in place to develop our young quarterback in Sam Darnold,” general manager Mike Maccagnan said Monday.
McCarthy was credited with helping Aaron Rodgers develop, although the relationship between the two frayed in recent years and is believed to have led to his firing.
The Jets have not hired a head coach who had previously been an NFL head coach since 1997, when they hired Bill Parcells. McCarthy would buck that trend.
McCarthy has been criticized for his game management, and some believe his offensive system has gotten stale. The Packers fired him on Dec. 2 after an upset loss to the Cardinals dropped their record to 4-7-1.
There is also a question of whether McCarthy should have won more in Green Bay with Rodgers and Brett Favre as his quarterbacks. He lost in the NFC Championship Game three times.
McCarthy is the third candidate known to interview for the Jets job. They spoke with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy on Wednesday and former Dolphins coach Adam Gase on Friday. The Jets are expected to interview Cowboys defensive passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach Kris Richard on Sunday in Dallas.
The other known candidates are: Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken, USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, former Lions and Colts coach Jim Caldwell and Baylor coach Matt Rhule. It is unclear whether all of these candidates will interview and when those interviews would occur.
