Serena Williams reveals she found out her sister's killer was free before suffering career-worst defeat to Johanna Konta

The 23-time Grand Slam winner, 36, suffered the heaviest defeat of her career at a tournament in San Jose earlier this month — with Brit No 1 Konta winning 6-1 6-0.

But Williams has now revealed her mind was elsewhere. The American was alerted to Robert Edward Maxfield’s early release for good behaviour via Instagram.

She said: "I couldn’t shake it out of my mind. It was hard because all I think about is her kids."

Yetunde Price, 31, was shot dead in Los Angeles in 2003, leaving behind three children who were aged 11, nine and five at the time.

Yetunde, who was also the Williams sisters' personal assistant, was the victim of a drive-by shooting.

Southside Crips gang member Maxfield was sentenced to 15 years in prison – but Williams saw he was already out on parole.

Speaking to TIME magazine, Williams added: "No matter what, my sister is not coming back for good behaviour.

"It’s unfair that she'll never have an opportunity to hug me.

"The Bible talks about forgiveness… I’m not there yet.

"I’d like to practise what I preach and teach my daughter that as well.

"I want to forgive. I have to get there."
