The Rutgers University football player facing attempted murder charges for allegedly plotting to kill two people remained locked up Friday following a brief hearing — during which his pastor defended him as a “well-mannered” young man.
Attorney Steve Altman, one of the lawyers for Izaia Bullock, was granted an adjournment in what was supposed to be a detention hearing so he can review documents turned over by prosecutors, MyCentralJersey.com reported.
The 22-year-old junior linebacker is charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder for allegedly planning to kill two members of a friend’s family. He was hit with an additional charge of cyber harassment Thursday.
Prosecutors are seeking to keep Bullock detained.
The courtroom in Middlesex County Superior Court was packed with his supporters, including Derrick Dumas, a pastor at First Baptist Church in Linden.
“He’s been a valued member of our community, respectful, considerate role model to many in our congregation,” Dumas said. “He’s a well-mannered, well-spoken young man.”
The pastor added, “This is really outside of his character and the person that I know.”
