Rangers boss Gerrard signing ex-Liverpool keeper Andy Firth from Barrow Town in shock transfer

Firth, 22, was at the Kop when Gerrard was a player and then youth chief and he will join to fight for a place in the Ibrox squad.

The shot stopper has been playing for Barrow in the National League but leapt at the chance of going to Glasgow.

Rangers' bargain deal was agreed and Firth is having a medical ahead of the surprise switch across the border.

Firth only joined Barrow from Liverpool in the last window – with his previous first team experience was on loan at Chester.

The news will come as a boost for Rangers after they slumped to defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock last night.

Jermain Defoe scored an incredible SIXTH debut goal in the clash after just 12 minutes following his loan move from Bournemouth.

That strike followed debut goals for West Ham, the Cherries, Tottenham, Portsmouth and Toronto.

But Steven Gerrard's men threw away the lead with goals from Eamonn Brophy and Jordan Jones sealing a dramatic comeback win for Kilmarnock.

Gerrard, when asked if his team had let their Old Firm spoils slip with their fourth defeat of the campaign, said: "I think so."
