Derek Stepan scored with 32 seconds left on the clock in overtime to lift Arizona to a 4-3 victory over the host Rangers on Friday night, stopping the Coyotes’ four-game losing streak.
Jordan Oesterle, Josh Archibald and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored as Arizona rallied from three goals down early in the second period. Adin Hill stopped 27 shots.
Kevin Hayes had a goal and an assist, and Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad also scored to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead less than six minutes into the second. Henrik Lundqvist finished with 30 saves.
Stepan fired a wrist shot off the crossbar four and a half minutes into the extra period as the Coyotes beat the Rangers for the first time in 10 meetings.
Oesterle got the Coyotes on the scoreboard with 10 minutes 42 seconds left in the middle period when his slap shot from the blue line deflected off Lundqvist’s arm. Nick Schmaltz picked up his 99th career assist on the play.
Stepan found Archibald cutting past the hash marks with 6:49 left in the third to pull the Coyotes within 1 goal, and Ekman-Larsson fired a sharp-angled shot over Lundqvist’s glove to tie it 3:48 later.
Buchnevich, who had missed the previous 13 games with a broken thumb, opened the scoring when he hammered a one-timer at 4:01 in the first period. Jimmy Vesey had an assist on the play to extend his point streak to three games.
Hayes scored his eighth goal of the season with 3:34 left in the opening period. Mats Zuccarello delivered a well-placed cross-ice pass to set up the goal. Hayes posted a multipoint game for the third consecutive contest, and he has three goals and three assists in that span.
Zibanejad sneaked a wrist shot past Hill at 5:48 of the second as the Rangers converted for the third time while up a skater. Chris Kreider was planted in front to provide a screen, and Neal Pionk recorded an assist. Pionk leads the Rangers in power-play assists (10) and power-play points (12) this season.
The Rangers were 1-15 on the power play in the previous eight games, and Arizona entered the game with the N.H.L.’s top penalty-killing unit.
DEVILS 5, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4 Nico Hischier scored 41 seconds into overtime to cap the Devils’ comeback from three goals down as they beat visiting Vegas.
Travis Zajac, Miles Wood, Kyle Palmieri and Brett Seney also scored for the Devils, who trailed by 3-0 after one period and by 4-1 after two before rallying for their second win in five games. Cory Schneider gave up three goals on seven shots over the first 9 minutes 22 seconds before he was pulled. Keith Kinkaid came on and finished with 14 saves.
William Karlsson had two goals, and Alex Tuch and William Carrier also scored for Vegas, which lost for just the third time in its last 12 games. Marc-Andre Fleury had 37 saves and remained one win from tying the Hall of Famer Tony Esposito for ninth on the list of career goaltender wins.
Zajac pulled the Devils to within 3-1 with a power-play goal at 2:59 of the second, but Karlsson’s second of the game and 13th of the season 58 seconds later restored the Golden Knights’ 3-goal lead.
Wood got his third of the season with 9:39 left in the middle period to pull the Devils back within 2.
Palmieri’s unassisted goal at 6:24 of the third made it 4-3. It was his team-leading 17th goal. Seney tied it with 5:05 left as a Vegas player kicked the puck into his own goal.
Tuch got Vegas on the scoreboard first just 1:19 into the game. Karlsson doubled the lead at 7:45, and Carrier made it 3-0 less than two minutes later.
That prompted Devils Coach John Hynes to pull Schneider, who came in 0-5-1 with a 4.29 goals-against average in his previous eight games.
