Premier League to trial VAR in 15 games THIS season starting after international break

It comes after the technology was successfully used during the World Cup with the aim of using it for every match at the beginning of next season.

An initial trial will take place over five Saturday 3pm matches on September 15, according to Sky Sports.

That means the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal will all be watched by video officials at their base at Stockley Park in North London.

But there will be no contact between those watching the matches and the referee on the pitch.

It is purely being used to determine whether the VAR team can handle the on-field demands during multiple matches.

VAR is widely used in European leagues such as the Bundesliga and La Liga.

It has been slowly introduced into the English game with the technology being used during four Carabao Cup ties in the previous round.

VAR is expected to be used across 60 cup games throughout the course of the season.

But it is the first time that VAR will be tested in the Premier League in a multi-match scenario.

And it won't be long before the technology is used in the Champions League, according to Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

He said last week: "For me, VAR is not completely clear, but we also know that there's no way back any more. Technology will come sooner or later. The plan for now is to use it from the next season.

"This is the plan but of course I am not an expert. But it is not so easy because we have to choose the provider, it's not easy to organise a competition across the continent with all the referees, so we have some issues."
