Premier League strugglers Fulham and Cardiff to fight for Argentina striker Emiliano Sala from Nantes

The Argentinian has banged in 12 goals for the mid-table French side this season – a tally that puts him at the top of the Ligue 1 scorer’s chart with PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.

Cardiff were said to be leading the race for the 28-year-old’s signature after it was revealed that manager Neil Warnock had travelled to France to watch him impress against Marseille.

But according to the France Football website they will face stiff competition from Fulham, who are desperate to increase their striking options.

Claudio Ranieri is known to be a fan of Sala, having coached the player while managing Nantes last season, and is likely to be granted a significant war chest for the transfer window.

The striker will need to weigh up the advantages of a move to London and linking up with his old boss against signing for a club arguably in a better position to avoid relegation this season.

Sala’s 12 strikes this term means he has already equalled his best goal return in a Ligue 1 season.

A pacy, predatory forward who can shoot with both feet, he is more notable for ghosting into the box to score with powerful headers.

Cardiff continue to monitor several strikers as the transfer window approaches, as they are currently operating without a recognised centre-forward.

Midfielder Callum Patterson has been pressed into service as a makeshift front man as Gary Madine and Kenneth Zohore have failed to impress at the top level.

Manager Warnock returned from his scouting trip and announced: "We’ve looked at five or six strikers in the last few weeks.”

Sala is also said to be attracting attention from other Premier League clubs, with Crystal Palace and Southampton among those reportedly keen to bring the player to England.
