Premier League dominates global sponsorship table rankings… with chaos-hit Manchester United flying high

Incredibly, six of the top 20 most commercially viable companies are English top-flight clubs… even though they all sit behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The NBA leads the way in the global sponsorship charts, with the likes of LeBron James and big-market teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks helping rake in the big bucks.

However, along with sixth-placed United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City also sit in the top 20 of the Powa Index.

Jose Mourinho and Co are helped by massive deal with Chevrolet and adidas, while Real Madrid (second) rely on Emirates and Microsoft.

Nike and Qatar Airways-backed Barcelona come in No3 in the list of top-earners.

Meanwhile, American football's NFL comes in fourth – with the Champions League seventh, just behind the Prem in fifth.

MLB (baseball), Formula One and even the 2018 World Cup all also crack the top handful in the latest numbers.

On the stats, POWA Index Commissioner, Mike Flynn, said: "The Premier League is regarded as the most competitive sports league in the world.

"This is reflected in the breadth of their representation in the POWA Index top 20.

"Much of this is due to the way the Premier League has shared its broadcasting revenues equally amongst its clubs, while La Liga originally allowed Real Madrid and Barcelona to strike its own deals.

"What is clear is that sport is becoming more global than ever and the Premier League and its clubs should be actively trying to learn from the NBA and The NFL.

"Meanwhile the American sports can gather insights into football’s approach to growing its fan-base around the world."
