Phil Jones left with gruesome gash and blood pouring from forehead after nasty clash

MANCHESTER UNITED claimed a tight victory over West Ham United on Saturday with Phil Jones certainly worse for wear after a clash in the closing stages.

The Hammers were loading balls into the opposition penalty area when the defender collided with Declan Rice.

Initially, referee Graham Scott didn't stop the play as Jones sat on the pitch.

The ball was eventually put out for a throw-in and, by that point, his nasty injury was clear to see.

TV cameras picked up Jones with blood pouring from a cut above his eyebrow and United physios rushed onto the pitch to give treatment.

The stoppage in play allowed medical staff to mop up the England international and send him on his way with a head bandage, letting him complete the 2-1 win.

Both United goals came from the penalty spot, smashed home by Paul Pogba after fouls on Juan Mata and Anthony Martial in either half.

West Ham threatened to take all three points after Felipe Anderson's equaliser, Michail Antonio coming closest when hitting the bar after 75 minutes.

The win sends the Red Devils fifth in the Premier League table and Jones will likely require further work on his cut to ensure he can feature in Tuesday's trip to Barcelona in the Champions League.
