Oliver to undergo double shoulder reconstruction

Clayton Oliver is facing a delayed start to pre-season with the star Melbourne midfielder set to undergo reconstructions to both of his shoulders.

Oliver, who’s renowned for his bash-and-crash style of play, is ranked first in the competition for contested possessions, second for tackles and third for clearances after 26 weeks of the season.

The 21-year-old isn’t expected to participate in contact drills until January at the earliest.

"Clayton injured both his shoulders during the year and will require surgery. He will have a Latarjet operation on both shoulders," Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney said.

"It's not as significant as a full shoulder reconstruction, but Clayton will need a 2-3 week separation between the procedures.

"He was unable to complete many contact drills at training in the last two months, so to perform the way that he did in that period is remarkable."

The Latarjet operation is used to treat recurrent shoulder dislocations, typically caused by bone loss or a fracture of the glenoid cavity in the shoulder.
