New York City is on sale: How to save on Broadway, NYC Restaurant Week, tourist attractions

“New York City is on sale.” That’s a phrase that no one expects to hear. But for the second year in a row, NYC & Company is putting on its NYC Winter Outing, which packages up appealing offers in New York City.

From Jan. 21 through Feb. 9, NYC Restaurant Week, NYC Broadway Week and NYC Must-See Week will align with the perfect triage of deals. The lineup, which went on sale on Wednesday, includes two-for-one Broadway tickets, two course lunches and three course dinners for $26 and $42 respectively (beverages, tip, tax, not included) and two for one attraction tickets.

There are hundreds of options between the three packages:

  • Nearly 70 attractions, including museums, tours and performing arts activities are listed for NYC Must-See Week.
    • Including: Empire State Building Observatory, 9/11 Tribute Museum
    • Including: Cipriani Wall Street, Tao Uptown
    • Including: “Frozen,” “Chicago”

There are also deals on hotels throughout the city – prices can drop 30% to 40% according to Chris Heywood, executive vice president of global communications for NYC & Company.

Heywood said Broadway tickets are available for as low as $50 to $75 each as a part of the deal.

But how can a city that is typically thought of as expensive – for a vacation or even a staycation – have its prices reduced so wildly?

“This is a time of year when the city slows down a little bit and hotels in particular really appreciate some stimulation in the market,” Heywood says. “This is what we like to call a ‘need period.’ ” .

The discount programs have run for years but now run parallel to each other as NYC Winter Outing.

NYC & Company created the Winter Outing program for two reasons: creating a catalyst to encourage more overnight vacations to the city and giving New Yorkers a less expensive way to enjoy their own city.

“We aligned the programs under the same time period, so that people could plan a meaningful holiday and combine dinner and a show at night with a museum during the day,” Heywood explains.

Having the bundle is a good way to help visitors and New Yorkers alike assemble an itinerary filled with Big Apple activities at the lowest rates of the year.

And for those who don’t enjoy crowds, the winter is the perfect time to visit New York – it’s much less chaotic, which Heywood calls a “peaceful New York.”

“It’s actually an outstanding time to see and experience the city because the lines at attractions and museums are shorter, it’s easier to get those difficult restaurant reservations and you can have the city to yourself,” he says.

But, Heywood warns, it’s important to book quickly.

“I recommend booking Broadway as soon as possible. If you can’t find a specific date, check another. During the week may be easier than weekends,” he says. “Regarding restaurant reservations, make resies at your favorite fine dining establishments sooner rather than later.”

By late afternoon Thursday, West Side Story was already sold out.

And while the deals offered are appealing on their own, there are plenty of other enticing options for activities to bulk up a New York City itinerary in January or February including ice skating, department store shopping and more. What’s better than a view of a snow-covered Central Park?
