Mario Melo, who also suffered from diabetes, was an Argentinian and South American boxing champion in the late 1980s and 90s.
In 1990 he challenged US boxer Michael Moorer for the WBA light-heavyweight world title – but was knocked out in the first round.
Melo, who was believed to be 56 years old, died after participating in the public eating competition in the city of Pinamar in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
According to Marca, the tragedy struck while Melo was on his third croissant.
He reportedly fought at light heavyweight and heavyweight, and was a champion in Argentina and South America.
He was rushed to a local hospital but is said to have been declared dead some hours later.
Reports suggest police have confirmed the former boxer had diabetes and his body has been sent for an autopsy for the cause of death to be discovered.
Melo admitted last year to having participated in a fixed fight against fellow Argentinian boxer Fabio Moli in 1997.
He retired with a record of 21-9-0 with 17 wins by knockout, but fell short in his world title chance against Moorer.
He last fought in 1998, losing to Mark Hulstrom.
The authorities are still waiting for the results of the autopsy.
