Manchester United's Champions League clash against Valencia still not sold out with Jose Mourinho facing career-defining test against Spaniards

United are struggling to sell out their crunch Champions League game with Valencia at Old Trafford — with fans appearing to abandon their players at their hour of need.

The club have texted members, alerting them to the availability of tickets in the 75,000-capacity ground.

The prices vary from £13 for under-16s to £58 for non-members in the most expensive seats.

After their lame-duck 3-1 defeat to West Ham early on Saturday, the players will be hoping they can get all the support they can muster.

But their usually hardcore away fans walked out after Marko Arnautovic scored the Hammers' third at the London Stadium over the weekend.

It is hardly surprising the club are struggling to sell out now, given the lacklustre, stagnant football that Mourinho and his players have served up so far this season.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are all showing swagger and providing excitement, while Tottenham walked away from United with all three points.

Mourinho could hardly be in more of a corner after defeats to Brighton and West Ham as well in the Premier League, alongside their humiliating exit to Derby in the Carabao Cup.

His row with Paul Pogba has defined United's season, with a training-ground bust-up over the timing of an Instagram post increasing the sense of turmoil.

Rivals City have been roundly criticised for not filling the Etihad Stadium during their Champions League home game against Lyon, which the champions ended up losing 2-1.

It remains to be seen how many tickets the Red Devils do end up selling, but their average of 75,100 last season was comfortably the highest in the Premier League.

Only Real Madrid (75,398) have had higher average attendances in last season's Champions League, with United's slightly reduced due to Uefa regulations to 74,467 in Europe.

Barcelona averaged 73,861, while Bayern Munich managed 70,000 and Tottenham 69,454 at Wembley.
