Anthony Martial’s sublime second-half effort, his fourth strike in as many games, was United’s 100th goal against their Merseyside rivals in the Premier League.
The Frenchman’s effort came after his fellow countryman Paul Pogba had netted the first when he slotted home the rebound to his own penalty.
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 77th minute penalty proved to be a mere consolation for the visitors.
Speaking after the game, manager Jose Mourinho was asked about the recent resurgence of Martial.
He commented: “When the players are playing bad it’s my fault, when the players play well it’s my responsibility!
“Let’s go half way and say it’s always half me and half the player.
“He took quite a long time to understand what we want from him, for his brain and also his body to be ready, but in this moment is playing really well.”
The ex-Chelsea boss has been encouraged with what he’s seen in the past couple of games, but stressed that he expects more from his team going forward.
He added: “In terms of philosophy and mentality yes (it has improved), but I would like a better Manchester United than we currently have.”
United travel to Bournemouth next Saturday, before they face a trip to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus side in the Champions League four days later.
