Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera both shone as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kept up his 100 per cent win record as Manchester United boss.
Elsewhere, Diogo Dalot showed his worth at left-back due to injury to Luke Shaw, but Phil Jones' error cost United a clean sheet.
Check out SunSport's player ratings below.
DAVID DE GEA: After being overworked in the second-half at Wembley last Sunday De Gea deserved an afternoon off . He was having one too ubntil the 72nd minute when he had to pick the ball out the net not that he could do much about Pascal Gross’ close range finish.
ASHLEY YOUNG: A consistent performer thoughout his time at Old Trafford his standards remain high whether playing on the right or left. Solid at the back he remains a threat going forward with his crosses.
VICTOR LINDELOF: Probably the most improved player at United this season. The centre-back is really starting to justify his £31million transfer fee. Another solid display with one superb hooked clearance the highlight.
PHIL JONES: He has his critics, probably more than he deserves, but all players get better with regular starts. However, the finger will be pointed at home for Pascal Gross’ goal as he missed his header.
DIOGO DALOT: Former boss Jose Mourinho described him as the right-back at United for the next ten years. He is not wrong either. Switched to left back for the day after Luke Shaw fell ill in the warm up, he look equally comfortable on that flank.
ANDER HERRERA: The Spaniard was a player on the periphery under Jose Mourinho but is thriving under Solskjaer. Provides far more movement and options than the static Marouane Fellaini.
NEMANJA MATIC: His improved performances as a screen in front of the back four are what have allowed Pogba the freedom to roam and cause damage further forward. Looking more like the player that was so good for Chelsea.
PAUL POGBA: Won and scored the penalty opener to make it five goals under Ole Solskjaer. The crowd roared as he did his tip toe run-up before he took two big strides and hammered the spot-kick home.
JESSE LINGARD: A quiet game by his usual high standards but he justifies an extended spell in this front three with Rashford and Martial. Subbed on 75 minutes as Juan Mata was brought on to try and calm things after Brighton got back into the game.
MARCUS RASHFORD: Celebrated his 150th Manchester United appearance with an absolute peach of a goal. Receiving a pass from Dalot he left Pascal Gross for dead with some brilliant skill before curling the ball into the far top corner.
ANTHONY MARTIAL: Only saw flashes of skill from the Frenchman today. The best of them came in the 57th minute when he turned two Brighton players inside out and brushed the roof of the net with a shot from the edge of the area.
SUBS:
JUAN MATA (on for Lingard 75): Solskjaer called on Mata’s calming presence to help see the game out.
ROMELU LUKAU (on for Martial 82): With the ball coming back to Brighton too much in the latter stages Lukaku is brought on to give United more of a physical presence upfront to hold it up.
MATTEO DARMIAN (on for Rashford 90) Brought on in injury time to try and waste some seconds.
