Man City's thrashing of Burnley halted after corner flag snapped in half after 'big hit' from Walker

Play was held up early on after Kyle Walker booted the corner flag while trying to cross from the right.

Head groundsman Lee Jackson sprinted on with a new one – and the whole incident provided plenty of amusement to fans – and to City defender Benjamin Mendy.

The Frenchman, who didn't make the matchday squad today, tweeted: "RIP bro, I will be snitching at your trial @kylewalker."

Referee Graham Scott looked pretty mystified as he trundled over to the bench with the snapped flag.

And one City fan account on Twitter labelled Walker as the "flag slayer" after the hilarious incident.

Others posted that they "wish the Man City corner flag a speedy recovery".

The club's Twitter supremo also had a bit of fun over the unusual incident.

Walker was tagged in photos showing the snapped pole, before a video of the groundsman was shared with the caption "not all heroes wear capes".

Pep Guardiola had his prayers answered as Jesus had the last laugh over the Pope.

Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus squeezed the opening goal past Nick Pope midway through the first half.

The Brazilian forward's eighth goal of the New Year set the tone for another resounding victory for the champions.

And Kevin de Bruyne showed he is getting back to his best form by scoring one and having a hand in two more.
It did not take long for the home side to break Burnley's resistence as Jesus collected a pass from Danilo.

He held off Kevin Long and weaved around James Tarkowski before lashing a shot beyond Pope at his near post.

Early in the second half Nico Otamendi gifted Matej Vydra a chance with some poor control but the former Derby man raced clear and fired his shot the wrong side of the post.

It proved to be a key moment as in the next 20 minutes City raced away with the game.

First de Bruyne fed Bernardo on the right and he cut inside before placing a shot which took a nick off Stephen Ward and squirmed under Pope.

If the England keeper was disappointed with that, there was little he could do about number three.

Bernardo and Riyad Mahrez teed up De Bruyne who took a touch before thumping a low 20 yard shot into the corner.

And the Belgian – who has had two lengthy injury lay offs this season – also had a big hand in the fourth goal.

His low cross from the right left Long with nowhere to go and he lashed the ball into the roof of his own net.

And sub Sergio Aguero added a fifth from the spot after Long had dragged back David Silva late on.

That makes it a staggering 29 goals without reply since Roberto Firmino scored for Liverpool here on January 3.

Guardiola described talk of a quadruple as 'fantasy' last week – yet his team are showing no signs of slowing up.
