Luke Shaw reveals right leg almost had to be amputated after suffering horror double break

The Manchester United defender, back in the England set-up after a 17-month exile, was given the bombshell news by a doctor after a horrific double fracture in September 2015.

Tests revealed two blood clots following his injury in a Champions League tie at PSV Eindhoven.

And Shaw said: “I was really close to losing my leg. I didn’t know that until six months later when the doctor told me.

“At the time, they were thinking about flying me back. If I’d flown back, I would probably have lost my leg because of the blood clots in the leg.

“I have got two scars down my leg where they had to cut it open and pull them out.”

Shaw, 23, looking to win his eighth cap against Spain at Wembley on Saturday, added: “I feel really strong now and my right leg is as it was before my leg break.

“But I had a lot of complications with my leg. That was a really hard moment for me in my career. That was in the past. I don’t care about that any more. I care about the here and now.”

The left-back, bought from Southampton for £33million in June 2014, spent 11 months on the sidelines before returning for United.

But he has played only seven minutes of international football since that injury.

That was against Germany in March 2017 and his last start was against Switzerland — a week before the injury.

Shaw said: “Obviously I am very honoured and privileged at getting selected. I am really looking forward to it.

“The first session was good and I’m looking forward to a good week away with England.

“At the moment, around the England squad, there’s a really good vibe and it’s a good place to be coming off the World Cup.”
