Connor Brown, 18, died following an attack outside a pub in the city centre on Sunday morning.
The teenager was a huge Black Cats supporter and aspiring boxer.
A GoFundMe page was launched by a family friend to help the Brown's pay for Connor's funeral costs.
In a bid to raise £8,000, Henderson kindly offered to pay over a quarter of the target that has now reached over £15,000.
Henderson kick-started his career at Sunderland before moving to Liverpool in 2011.
He made 71 Premier League appearances at his boyhood club over a three-year period and is highly-regarded as a favourite among supporters.
According to the Chronicle, two men have been arrested in connection with the incident and a 20-year-old has been charged.
Detective Chief Inspector John Bent said: "This was a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a young man who had his entire life ahead of him.
"We are committed to determining the circumstances behind Connor's death and a thorough investigation is ongoing as we look to bring those responsible to justice.
"We are not treating this as a random attack and I would like to reassure the community that we will leave no stone unturned in finding out the truth behind Connor's death."
Fans on social media have praised Henderson for his gesture.
One said: "Henderson is a hero. Sunderland forever and always."
Another wrote: "What a guy Jordan Henderson is! Donated £2500 for Connor Brown – special that."
