Listen to Episode 21 of ‘Blue Rush’: Coaching Search, Wild Playoffs feat. Pepper Johnson

The Giants’ season might be over, but the search for a head coach to replace Pat Shurmur is getting intense. Jimmy Failla and I open the newest episode of the “Blue Rush” podcast examining who could be the right fit to take the job. That includes discussing Jimmy’s fantasy that Bill Belichick comes back to coach the Giants.

We also looked back at the crazy Wild Card playoff games, which included some poor coaching, no-calls and Booger McFarland’s brain farts. We also look at the spreads for the Divisional Round games and make our picks. Can Kirk Cousins win two road playoff games? Can Russell Wilson take down Aaron Rodgers?

NY Post Giants beat writer Paul Schwartz drops by to break down the top candidates to become the next head coach. Is Matt Rhule getting the job? Jimmy and Paul talk about the Bill Belichick-to-the-Giants idea and whether there is even a remote chance it happens. Schwartz brought the heat with his question to Dave Gettleman on paying Eli Manning a boatload of money to eventually become a backup just two games into the season. They discuss the bizarre press conference from the Giants GM last week.

Giants great Pepper Johnson then joins the pod. He speaks about winning two Super Bowls as a player with the Giants and three as a coach with the Patriots. Is winning as a player better than winning as a coach at all? He also talks about his new role as the defensive coordinator for the XFL Wildcats, explains why he’s excited for the XFL and provides his team’s outlook. He also talks about the difference in coaching styles between Belichick and Bill Parcells. Pepper has spent more than a quarter century either being coached by Belichick or coaching alongside him. He takes us inside the brain of Belichick, his mannerisms and how he could be a prankster at times. Nobody has worked with Belichick as long as Pepper has.
