Lewis Hamilton celebrates record fifth F1 world championship

Lewis Hamilton etched his name inside the history books once again as he sensationally retained his Formula One world title with two races to go.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Mexican Grand Prix but Mercedes driver Hamilton was the one left celebrating as the brilliant Brit sealed his fifth championship after finishing in fourth.

National treasure Hamilton, 33, won his first title 10 years ago before celebrating success again in 2014, 2015 and last year in 2017.

His fifth world title puts him alongside legendary Argentine F1 racer Juan Manuel Fangio and just two triumphs behind German great Michael Schumacher .

The result in Mexico City means Hamilton can now enjoy the season ending races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi, knowing he can place anywhere on the grid and still not slip up to his Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel.

It also confirms Hamilton’s standing as the greatest British F1 driver of all-time having won two more titles now than motor racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart.

Hamilton, who needed to finish only seventh at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez to beat Sebastian Vettel to the title with two rounds to spare, spent much of the race at odds with his Mercedes team as he struggled for pace
