Jordan Spieth struggled to make putts all season long on the PGA Tour as he went winless in 2018, but the three-time major champion was locked in on the greens Friday at the Ryder Cup.
Team USA captain Jim Furyk opted to break up Spieth’s successful Ryder Cup partnership with Patrick Reed and placed Spieth in a group with close friend Justin Thomas. The American team built an early lead over the European team of Tyrrell Hatton and Paul Casey, and Spieth was on fire.
At the par-4 first hole, Spieth nearly holed out for eagle with a perfect approach shot. The ball lipped out, but he made the birdie putt to in the hole.
At the fourth, Spieth preserved Team USA’s 1-up lead by jarring a lengthy par put.
At the very next hole, Spieth drained another long putt for birdie to give the Americans a two-hole advantage.
Spieth was once regarded as one of the the best putters in the world, but he ranked 136th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting in 2018. Spieth is 4-3-2 all-time at the Ryder Cup – and if he can maintain his touch on the greens in France, he’ll be extremely difficult to beat.
Spieth put Team USA 3-up through seven with a chip-in at the 7th.
