But Maxwell clobbered it higher and more vertically than he could have anticipated.
And before he knew it, the ball smashed into the spider cam that was lurking overhead.
The chances of such a thing happening are slim, but Maxwell could scarcely believe it, as the ball landed back down on the field.
The umpire signalled for a DEAD BALL and that it had to be re-bowled.
Current Yorkshire ace Maxwell helped the Aussies to a total of 158/4 at the Gabba, giving India an achievable target.
He might have been thanking his lucky stars for that one though, given the arc of the ball, he may have been caught out.
Local broadcasters call the device the 'Flying Fox' and could not believe it as the incident unfolded.
One Twitter user joked: "One way to get rid of spiders I suppose."
Another said: "Maxi doesn't even spare spider cam."
