SUSSEX STAKES
CIRCUS MAXIMUS is a big top in the Sussex Stakes. He floored Too Darn Hot in the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot and can be the ringmaster again.
All of the past 10 winners of this Group 1 were placed last time out — so we can quickly put a line through Accidental Agent, Zabeel Prince, Happy Power and Phoenix Of Spain who failed to make the podium.
You need to have won at least a Group 2 race to have any chance in this and the remaining four hopefuls all have that box ticked on their CV.
They also have the positive trend of having run at Royal Ascot earlier this season but only one four-year-old has scored in the last decade, which is a worry for I Can Fly.
We haven’t had a six-year-old taste success since way back in 2006 which must be a question for Lord Glitters too.
So we are left with Circus Maximus and Too Darn Hot.
The pair are not far apart on form but their key clash came at Royal Ascot when CIRCUS MAXIMUS got the better of John Gosden’s filly.
Ryan Moore rode a cracker on him that day and can repeat the feat for Aidan O’Brien.
