Gerwyn Price named Marmite player of darts as Simon Whitlock takes top spot

Gerwyn Price’s reputation as the player darts fans love to hate has been confirmed.

The sport is full of big personalities and polarising figures like Price, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright. Price has had his fair share of run-ins with crowds while he has been the darling of the audience at other tournaments.

And research conducted by Gambling.com proves Price’s status as the Marmite figure of darts. Using social listening tool Linkfluence, they collected sentiment data from Reddit and Twitter surrounding every darts player over the last 12 months. They then ranked them based on their positive and negative sentiment to discover the internet’s most loved and hated players.

Price claimed top spot as the most hated player on the internet with 23.8 per cent of all posts about him being negative. However, he also emerged as one of the sport’s most popular players with 37.4 per cent of online posts about him being positive. That places him in the top 10 of most loved players online.

Simon Whitlock claimed the top spot as the internet’s most loved darts player with 56.1 per cent of all posts about him online being positive, compared to just 6.7 per cent being negative. Being an Aussie seems to help players in the popularity stakes.
