Germany 0 France 0: Ilkay Gundogan booed by home fans as race row in national side shows ugly head again in goalless draw

The Manchester City star, who like fellow national team-mate Mesut Ozil met Turkey President Erdogan, was whistled as he came onto replace Leon Goretzka in the second half of this goalless stalemate.

Ozil, of Turkish descent like Gundogan, has since retired from international duty with the race row threatening to tear apart the 2014 world champions, who crashed out at the group stage in Russia this year.

On the pitch, Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was the busier of the two shot-stoppers as he starred in his Les Bleus debut.

Germany were almost down to ten men just three minutes into the game, when Antonio Rudiger left stud marks on Benjamin Pavard's neck – which resulted in the defender receiving medical treatment.

And it was the hosts that missed the first key chance of the match, with Werner cutting inside Pavard, and forcing a smart save from Areola.

Before Rudiger and Mats Hummels both missed the target from headers as Germany threatened to break the deadlock.

Olivier Giroud had France's best chance of the first half, out-muscling his markers to get on the end of an N'Golo Kante cross, but his effort was parried away by Manuel Neuer.

While Kylian Mbappe's free-kick was well stopped before it could nestle into the top left corner.

The chances kept coming in the second period, with the likes of Marco Reus, Thomas Muller and Antoine Griezmann all failing to get on the score sheet.

Matthias Ginter though he had put Germany ahead in the 77th minute, but his downward header was somehow turned away by Areola as he looks to stake his place in the starting XI.
