Gennady Golovkin is most fearsome puncher in world but his reflexes are slowing

Some feat considering among the 11s 6lb heavy hitters are Harry Greb, Sugar Ray Robinson, Carlos Monzon and Marvin Hagler.

Triple G has such explosive power in his punches that he racked-up 23 consecutive knockout victories – another middleweight record.

When Floyd Mayweather Jnr retired three years ago everyone in boxing agreed Golovkin was the automatic choice to step into his boots as the best fighter on earth.

But there's no doubt at 36, and after 24 world championship fights, he is now approaching the twilight of his career and has started to slip down the pound-for-pound ladder.

Three of his last four fights have gone the distance. That doesn't mean he doesn't punch as hard as he used to – the fact is his reflexes have slowed and his timing isn't what it was.

Golovkin's amazing record

Former WBA/WBO world middleweight champion

Fights: 40

Wins: 38

Wins by KO: 34

Amateur record:  345 wins, 5 losses

Bangkok 2003 World Championships middleweight champion

His two fights with Canelo Alvarez were both classics and will live long in the memory.

They showcased the skills and courage that separate the great champions from the rest of the common herd.

Golovkin, thanks to the absurd scoring of judge Adelaide Byrd, was robbed of a deserved victory.

The draw decision started one of the biggest boxing controversies of the 21st century.

As a result, a rematch was inevitable and again it produced another absorbing exhibition of technical brilliance.

This time Alvarez got a tight points decision in his favour which brought few arguments.

If we are lucky we may see Golovkin get a deserved third crack at Alvarez.

It would complete a trilogy to rival the historic Ali-Frazier, Bowe-Holyfield and Zale-Graziano three timers.
