Fireworks begin early as yearlings go under hammer at Magic Millions

It’s less than a fortnight until the Magic Millions sales explode on the Gold Coast with their finest-ever bunch of yearlings assembled and the fireworks begin immediately on January 9 when the first 10 lots of the five-day extravaganza sell.

With the sale lot numbers set up by a revolving letter of the alphabet – this year it is the letter P – the action kicks off with a Fastnet Rock colt.

Bloodlines has gone through the first 10 lots and fittingly the opener by Fastnet Rock is offered by the Magic Millions owner Gerry Harvey.

Here are the credentials of the first 10 lots to sell:

Lot 1 – Fastnet Rock x Palacio De Cristal Colt: Fastnet Rock’s credentials are world famous and the dam of this colt is a daughter of Encosta de Lago, which won five races including the group2 Villiers Stakes. This colt’s pedigree page is laden with black type performers.

Lot 2 – Vancouver x Paris Who filly which sells from the Coolmore draft and is the first yearling to be sold at auction by the Golden Slipper-winning son of Medaglia d’Oro. The dam is a daughter of Fusaichi Pegasus, who is a full brother to the stallion Zizou.

Lot 3 – Spirit Of Boom x Passara colt from the draft of Eureka Stud. Passara has produced four foals to race and all are winners including his full brother Boomsarfa, which is a two time two-year-old winner and has won more than $200,000.

Lot 4 – Dundeel x Passiflora Colt from Arrowfield Stud. The stallion is enjoying a tremendous season producing more than 20 individual winners in Australasia, while Passiflora has produced three foals to race and all are winners.

Lot 5 – More Than Ready x filly is the first yearling to sell in Australia by the powerful Chinese operation Yulong. The dam of this filly is a daughter of Fastnet Rock with a pedigree including Calming, Calming Influence and War Artist.

Lot 6 – Rubick x Peace Academy colt with the sire sitting in third on the first-season prizemoney winners list that includes the Darren Weir colt Yes, Yes, Yes, a Flemington winner. The dam is by the renowned broodmare sire Royal Academy and is closely related to Hurtle Myrtle and is offered by Kitchwin Hills.

Lot 7 – Rubick x Peahen colt from Coolmore’s huge draft. The dam was bred and raced in Ireland, winning at Leopardstown, and is a most likely type.

Lot 8 – I Am Invincible x Pearl Star colt from the KBL Thoroughbreds farm. I Am Invincible needs no introduction and this colt is the mare’s first foal which won and was placed in black type company.

Lot 9 – Spirit Of Boom x Pegasus Miss colt from Rosemont Stud’s offerings. The mare Pegasus Miss has already produced the listed Calaway Gal Stakes-placed Boomstress and has a winning pedigree with the second dam, Pegasus Queen, producing six winners from seven to race.

Lot 10 – Medaglia d’Oro x Peggy Jean colt from the Widden Stud draft. This is a great way to round off the top 10 with this colt’s dam a winner of the group1 ATC Sires’ Produce. Her first foal sold at the Inglis Easter Sales in March by IAm Invincible and fetched $750,000 to the bid of Emirates Park. The sire is one of the world’s most prominent shuttle stallions.

That’s the rundown of the first 10 yearlings and about an hour later one of the highlights of the sale takes her place as Lot 63 – the Snitzel filly from Response, a sister to Australia’s champion two-year-old Estijaab, and reports of this filly are outstanding.

Time up for d’Oro

It’s not difficult to agree with Darley’s decision to suspend Medaglia d’Oro’s shuttle commitments to their Hunter Valley base when you look at his popularity at his Kentucky farm. Medaglia d’Oro began shuttling to Australia in 2010 and has made a huge impact, siring Vancouver and Astern, but it is America where he has developed into a super sire. Overall the stallion has produced 21 individual group1 winners and the majority are American-breds. In 2019 his book of mares is quite amazing with relations to Songbird, Rachel Alexander, Exaggerate, Lady Aurelia and many more. Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley and Godolphin consortiums have enjoyed one of their best racing seasons with 30 individual group1 winners throughout the world. Wins in the English Derby, Melbourne Cup plus the fantastic season enjoyed by their No.1 stallion Dubawi has the all blue battalion shaping up for another big year.
HOOFNOTE: Medaglia d’Oro has seven yearlings selling at the Magic Millions and apart from the Peggy Jean colt Coolmore has a filly from Miracles Of Life and Gooree Stud a filly from their Flight Stakes-winning mare Speak Fondly.

Boxing Day deals

There were plenty of equine bargains at Ellerslie’s Boxing Day card in three of the four black type races spearheaded by the $NZ5000 ($4750) Karaka Select Sale purchase in 2016 by Danzdanzdance in the group 1 Zabeel Stakes. Trained by the partnership of Chris Gibbs and Michelle Bradley, the Mastercraftsman-bred mare romped home by 3 lengths with Kiwi jockey Opie Bosson full of praise for the effort in the weight-for-age classic. Danzdanzdance had won the group1 Captain Cook Stakes at her previous start and the two top-line wins have seen her prizemoney swell to $NZ436,713 from 11 starts, which have produced four wins and four placings. Earlier Pinmedown took out the group2 Eight Carat Stakes bought by agent Paul Moroney for $NZ28,000 at the 2017 Select Sales and prepared by his brother Mike to take her earnings to $NZ66,750 from just four starts. In the inaugural running of the listed Uncle Remus Stakes, the Roger James-prepared Hypnos, purchased from the same sale, scored a decisive win. He was a $NZ50,000 son of Reliable Man who continues to produce staying types in both Australia and New Zealand.
