Talks over a new contract following the Three Lions’ march to the semi-finals at the World Cup in Russia have broken down.
Southgate, who is signed up until 2020, has refused to commit when asked about a new deal.
But he does want a big increase on his £2million-a-year wages as predecessors Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello each raked in £5m.
Southgate, 48, said: “First and foremost, I am 100 per cent focused on this job, nothing else.
“I have two years that lead to a European Championship with games at Wembley and that is going to be a brilliant experience.
“I’m enjoying the role, I love the challenge and that’s it really. The future is not for me to decide.”
Southgate's England were beaten 2-1 by Spain in their Uefa Nations League opener on Saturday.
The former Middlesbrough manager is determined to improve England's pressing and passing game to compete with the world's elite.
But he fears the Three Lions are lacking the quality to play his style of football.
Southgate said: "If anybody wasn’t aware of the gulf, then yes, this proves it. But I don’t think we were under any illusions as a coaching team.
“We know there’s a distance to the very top teams. At moments we compete and we look like being able to create chances. We created some good chances against Spain.
"But there’s a level for us to go to and that’s a really good challenge for us over the next couple of years.”
